Thakkali Chutney - Tomato Chutney

I'm not raving much about this accompaniment, I can only say that it is a must have for every breakfast and snack dish in South india. It's the least stress dish because you can never run out of tomatoes or 10 minutes in the morning while starting to deal with an already very busy day ;)

TOMATO CHUTNEY

Ingredients:
  • 5 medium sized onions finely chopped
  • 4 medium sized tomatoes finely chopped
  • 5 pods of crushed garlic
  • 1 tbsp urad dal/ ulundham paruppu
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 mustard seeds
  • 3-4 curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp of chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tsp chilli powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
  • Salt as needed
    Method:
    • Heat oil in a deep pan, add mustard seeds and urad dal. Wait till it splutters and then toss in the onion along with crushed garlic.
    • Now enjoy the aroma in your kitchen and continue to saute the onions till they are light brown.
    • Toss in the juicy tomatoes and allow it to cook for 6 - 7 minutes.
    • Season it with chilli powder, coriander powder, salt and turmeric powder and mix well.
    • Pop a lid over the pan for 3 - 5 minutes or till all the ingredients blend well together and oil separates.
    • You may need to keep a watch on the dish such that it does not dry out. Trust me that's something you may regret.
    • Transfer the chutney into your serving dish and garnish with coriander leaves.
