Vengayam Chutney - Onion Chutney

What's that one thing you always have in the kitchen? Onions I believe. Try this lip smacking onion chutney recipe that will go perfectly well with Idlis and dosas. 

VENGAYAM CHUTNEY













Ingredients:

  • 5 Medium sized onions finely chopped
  • 4 - 5 Dried red chillis (Bedikkaai variety)
  • Tamarind small goose berry sized
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida
  • 5 -6 Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Uluntham paruppu/ urad dal
  • 1 cup Water
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Rock salt as per taste

Method:

  • Run the onions, chillis, tamarind and salt in a blender until smooth.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add the mustard seeds and wait till it splutters.
  • Then add uluntham paruppu/ urad dal, curry leaves and asafoetida. 
  • Now mix in the onion paste and saute well.
  • Pour in the water and mix well. Allow this to simmer.
  • Stir it occasionally. Takes about 20 minutes to cook. 
  • This onion chutney will be a breakfast bell, the moment the aroma spreads you'll have everyone at the dining table! Try it and let us know how it turned out.
